Outback Queensland is the realm of bush poets, flying doctors, stampeding dinosaurs and wily stockmen. It's here, in this rugged and remote region, that legends are born and legacies created. Amid the desert dust, you'll discover a rich history of animal and human occupation that stretches back more than 95 millions years.

Lark Quarry has the largest group of running dinosaur tracks in the world, while the World Heritage-listed Australian Fossil Mammal Site (Riversleigh/Naracoorte) is one of the most significant fossil deposits in the world and the richest known fossil mammal deposit in Australia. Engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings on the sandstone overhangs of Carnarvon Gorge National Park are a poignant reminder of the indigenous people who used the area for thousands of years. Thirty thousand years on and intrepid Australian explorers Burke and Wills were forging north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria during their south-north crossing of the continent in 1860-61.

Colourful characters, a proud history and a landscape which seems endless in time and space - this is Queensland’s Outback. An amazing country of red hills, plains that stretch to eternity, and spectacular sunsets. A place where characters share a yarn and people say g’day. A land of the dreamtime, where ancient Aboriginal culture is recorded on rock faces and cave walls, and where evidence of the dinosaurs’ reign over the earth can still be found. A variety of accommodation is available ranging from four star hotels to backpacker hostels and Outback pubs. For a truly Australian Outback experience, spend some time at an Outback cattle or sheep station and enjoy true country hospitality at its best. The winter months between April and October are the most popular time to visit the Outback. During the summer months (wet season) temperatures can be high, however most facilities, transport and accommodation are air-conditioned and there is less humidity than on the coast. The Outback is home to some of the most amazing wildlife and spectacular scenery to be found anywhere in the world. It is truly blessed with some of the most diverse and out of the way national parks, including the World Heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields and Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park, plus the famous dinosaur footprints at Lark Quarry Conservation Park. The Outback folk sure know how to kick up their heels and have a good time with an array of weird and wonderful events and festivals throughout the year. Queensland’s Outback promises every visitor a memorable historic journey through a rich panorama of Australia’s great cultural and pioneering heritage. So, pack up your swag and head on out to experience the colours, contrast and real character of the Australian Outback.
