Polynesia - The Wayfinders
View Polynesia - The Wayfinders. Video hosted on Youtube. Ancient Polynesians settled 10 million square miles of the Pacific by navigating sailing canoes from island to island. But their tremendous story was almost lost. Can a single sailing canoe from Hawaii restore the pride of the Polynesian culture after years and years decay and denial? Centuries before European explorers ventured beyond their shorelines, the ancestors of todayâs Polynesians had sailed to every habitable island in the far corners of the Pacific. This ancient Polynesian sea voyaging tradition comes to life again in "Wayfinders: A Pacific Odyssey." A journey to the ancient Inca's sacred Andean peaks, wayfinders in Polynesia, a spiritual odyssey in the Himalayas of Nepal and vanishing ice's impact on Inuit life in the Arctic are all explored by Canada's only National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis in the four-part documentary series "Light at The Edge of The World" airing weekly, beginning February 7, 2007 on the National Geographic Channel.
"You know, the year that I was born, there were six thousand languages spoken on earth," says anthropologist and ethnobotanist Wade Davis, at the beginning of the 90th Parallel's four part series Light at the Edge of the World.
"And of the six thousand languages spoken on earth, fully half aren't being taught to children, which means, that effectively, unless something changes, they're dead."
"Half of humanity's repertoire will be lost in a generation or twoâ¦an unprecedented pace of change.
I don't think this has to happen."- Wade Davis.

Map Polynesia Polynesia, one of the three major divisions (with Melanesia and Micronesia) of the Pacific Islands, encompassing islands in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. Polynesia (Greek for "many islands") consists of American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Easter Island, French Polynesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, Niue, the Pitcairn Islands, Samoa (formerly Western Samoa), Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and the Wallis and Futuna Islands. The term "Polynesia" was first used by Charles de Brosses in 1756, and originally applied to all the islands of the Pacific. Jules Dumont d'Urville in an 1831 lecture to the Geographical Society of Paris proposed a restriction on its use, and also introduced the terms Micronesia and Melanesia. This division into three distinct Pacific subregions remains in widespread use today.
Geographically, and oversimply, Polynesia may be described as a triangle with its corners at Hawai'i, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the various island chains that form the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. Niue is a rare solitary island state near the centre of Polynesia. Island groups outside of this great triangle include Tuvalu and the French territory of Wallis and Futuna. There are also small outlier Polynesian enclaves in Papua New Guinea, the Solomons and in Vanuatu. However, in essence, it is an anthropological term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia) whose pre-colonial population generally belongs to one ethno-cultural family as a result of centuries of maritime migrations.
